[Morioka] Experiencing a Retro Train with a Stove Onboard!
Hello! This is Koromi.
Today, I’m taking a ride on a very special train—the Kazekko Stove Tono-go.
This winter-only train offers a unique experience, and I’ll be sharing all of its charm with you!
What is the Kazekko Stove Tono-go?
The Kazekko Stove Tono-go is a special seasonal train operated using JR East’s event train, the View Coaster Kazekko.
Originally designed as an open-air trolley train that allows passengers to feel the breeze while traveling, it transforms in the winter. During this season, Daruma stoves are installed inside the train, keeping the cabin warm and cozy.
With the gentle warmth of the stoves, a nostalgic retro atmosphere, and breathtaking winter scenery, this train offers a truly special experience!
The Kazekko Stove Train – A Popular Winter Ride!
I’ve arrived at the local train platform of Morioka Station.
I got here a little early before departure, but the train had already arrived… (I was hoping to catch it pulling in, so that was a bit disappointing!)

The stove illustration on the front of the train is really cute!
The train itself features a two-tone green and cream color scheme, with a wind-inspired design painted on the body.
Right in front of the train, passengers who are about to board are already having a little photo session—everyone’s excited!

Right now, the windows are fixed in place, but during the summer, the glass panels are removed so passengers can fully enjoy the open-air ride with the breeze.

All Aboard!
Now, let’s hop on the train!

The moment I step inside, I feel as if I’ve traveled back in time to an old-fashioned local train.

The first thing that catches my eye is the Daruma stove, installed at the end of the car.

A gentle cloud of smoke drifts around, filling the cabin with a nostalgic charm.
The seats are made of wood, giving the train an authentic retro feel. They’re a bit on the firm side for long rides, but that’s part of the experience!

Each booth-style seat comes with a wooden table, complete with a built-in drink holder—a thoughtful touch that enhances the vintage atmosphere.
Looking up at the ceiling, I notice its exposed framework, adding a rugged yet stylish character to the space.

To complete the nostalgic look, the warm glow of incandescent lighting bathes the car in a soft, inviting ambiance.
The Stove Feels Like a Street Food Stall!
One of the most unique features of the Daruma stove is that passengers can warm up their own food right on top of it.
Sausages, rice balls, hot dogs—everyone carefully places their favorite snacks on the metal grill, letting them heat up slowly and deliciously.

Once warmed, passengers bring their food back to their seats and savor it at their own pace. Meanwhile, the rich, smoky aroma drifts through the cabin, creating a cozy and nostalgic atmosphere.
In the midst of winter’s chill, there’s something truly special about enjoying piping hot food, wrapped in the warmth of the stove. This train isn’t just about transportation—it’s about experiencing the journey itself.
A Snowy Landscape Unfolds Outside the Window
Another highlight of the Kazekko Stove Tono-go is the striking contrast between the warmth inside the train and the freezing cold outside.

Even when temperatures drop below freezing, the Daruma stove keeps the cabin cozy and warm. This sharp difference in temperature makes the experience of riding a stove train even more special.
Final Thoughts
The gentle warmth of the stove, the rich, smoky aroma filling the cabin, and the breathtaking snowy scenery outside the window—everything about this train ride feels nostalgic and heartwarming.
Passengers naturally strike up conversations with one another, sharing stories as they warm their food and enjoy the ride together. It’s an experience that is unique to this train, making the journey itself just as memorable as the destination.
If you ever have the chance, I highly recommend taking a ride on this winter-exclusive train—it’s an unforgettable way to embrace the season!
